Poetry Book Review: A Collection of Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes Published Since 1995

Long, Sylvia. 1999. Mother Goose. San Francisco: Chronicle
     Books. ISBN: 0811820882.

Sylvia Long is an award winning artist that has a love of nature which is reflected in her illustrations throughout the book.  She has used beautiful watercolor illustrations to bring the traditional nursery rhymes of Mother Goose to life.  Long has included many of the familiar nursery rhymes as well as many unfamiliar ones and has grouped them according to various themes within the book.  In the artist's note at the beginning of the book Long indicates that she did not feel justified in changing the words of the rhymes, but tried to add a gentleness to the pictures that indicates how the rhymes can be interpreted in many different ways.  This is a beautiful collection of classic Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Sylvia Long has done an exceptional job of bringing new life to these rhymes through her mesmerizing and gentle illustrations that children will enjoy for hours.
