Florian, Douglas. Bow Wow Meow Meow: It's Rhyming Cats and
Dogs. San Diego: Harcourt, Inc. ISBN: 0-15-216395-6.

Award winning author of Beast Feast, Insectlopedia, Mamalabilia, and Lizards and Frogs and Polliwogs, Douglas Florian shows us how much fun poetry can be in his book Bow Wow Meow Meow.  He uses our favorite domestic animals and their wild counter-parts in twenty-one rhyming, fun, and delightful poems.  Florian has done a wonderful job integrating a variety of amusing techniques to entertain the reader and stimulate the imagination.  In his opening poem “Dog Log,” Florian uses rhymed verse to capture the activities involved throughout a normal day in the life of a dog. Rolled out of bed/Scratched my head/Brought the mail/Wagged my tail.  The complimenting picture that accompanies the poem uniquely illustrates the dog’s brain sectioned off to include each part of the dog’s day. In his concrete poem “The Poodles” he presents each line of the text in a circle favoring the curly nature of the poodle's hair.  Using watercolor on primed brown paper and collage, Florian has done a magnificent job illustrating the curls of the poodle on the facing page.  Florian also uses clever word play as he does in the poem “The Persian.”  I am a cat of longhaired version/A pet-igree that’s known as purrrsian.  Bow Wow Meow Meow is a great book to share with children.  Douglas Florian’s playful illustrations and lyrical, humorous poems join together to create visual images of these animals that we love so much.  Bow Wow Meow Meow is a wonderful edition for any poetry collection.
