A Poem Written and Published By A Child

bkcl1d.gif

Introduction:  This poem could be used at the beginning of the year as students begin to rekindle old friendships and begin to make new ones.  Ask the students to describe what they think a friend is.

Friends by Mattie J. T. Stepanek

You can have more than one friend,
Even if you have a favorite best friend.
Friends are all different.
They come in many
Sizes, colors, ages, and abilities.
Friends are like rainbows,
Heartsongs, and life ...
They are a gift from God.

Taken from:

Stepanek, Mattie J. T. 2002. CELEBRATE THROUGH HEARTSONGS. New York: VSP Books.

Extension:  Have the children draw a picture of themselves and their friends playing together.  Have them write a couple of sentences or a poem about their best friend and bind the book for the children to share with the family and friends.
